    Default Family Dilemma

    Okay NDN Forum Members.

I have a poker related dilemma but instead of posting this in the general poker chat forum, I chose this one because it has to deal with family and I need some advise.

Here's the story, and I'll tell you the situation in a bit.

My sister, who has been looking for a job, came home and told my mother she had found a job at this bar, my whole family plays poker at.

We were fine with that, and she was going to be dealing at the poker room on Wednesdays for tips.

She said she was still going to be looking for a job and she has been and that's fine.

This is where it gets sticky for me.

And how I come into it.

The owner of the poker room/bar, who told my sister she could work there, got informed that she had to be 21 to deal at the poker room.

She's 19, and if they get caught letting her deal the bar could get fined.

But technically if they get caught playing poker in there for cash, they are going to get fined anyways.

That's there business and their risk.

This is the place I play poker at regularly that is a freeroll but they said they are going to start a cash game one night a week.

The freerolls are legal, but the cash wouldn't be.

Anyways, the owner knows I have dealt poker before and comes to me and asks if I will deal and I said I would think about it.

Then I tell my mother and sister and get bitc*ed at because it's unfair, but it's not my fault and I didn't ask for it.

I just wanted to know how many people would go ahead and say yes.

I could use the extra money and let her help me, I just have to be the main one, but do I give her half and half of the money or just a fourth or what because I will be doing most of the work?

That's just what I was wondering, so please help me make the right decision, thanks.

I think you got yourself in a pickle on this one. How ever I do know how to

get around the system as far as the legal part of the game goes. where i live

the lions club host regular prize money poker tournaments. But here the deal

you, you pay money at the door to get in the games inside which include

bingo and chess, a lil bit of chess/checkers/dominoes. They prizes given out

to the poker game winners include such things as gift cards, big screen t.v's,

deer rifles, whatever it may be. As long as it isnt cold hard cash, it is legal.

As far as your sis, once again, it is perfectly legal for her to deal in a non

cash paying poker game as the one layed out above. However in your current

situation, just go with the flow, be nice and help your sis out, and mention

what i said to the boss of the bar. Itll help everyone out in the long run if he

    does business this way.

Well see we found out and what happens at this bar that it's a prize but the prize is one hundred bucks cash.

    It's legal because it's a freeroll.

The part that gets tricky is the fact that he wants to add a cash game.

Yes cash ring games would be tricky hmmm..... He is gonna have to keep this game hush hush in the back rooms or something. set it up to where you exchange you cash for chips, then cash out your chips for cash at the end of the game, that way if it is busted yall can just say hey we are playing a friendly regular game, dont even mention cash.thats my verdict

    That's a great idea.

I think that's how he's going to do it anyways, but the trick is to keep it hush hush because some people have some big mouths.

you know how that goes right?

Well thanks for letting us try and help you. I'm glad that you trust us with your family issues. It does seem like a sticky situation because you don't want to upset anything that's going on in the family or anything at home period. You are a good brother for caring this much. I wish I had a brother like you.. Anyways..

I think that you should talk to your sister about it and see how she feels about you working at the same place as a dealer, like her, but legally. This economy really isn't helping anyone that I know and I think that if you can get paid for dealing and make some extra money, then its fine you know?

I would just really talk to your sister and make sure that she doesn't get into any kind of trouble if she works there because no one likes fines! It may not happen, but its a possibility and you should look out for your sister. I would think it would be more than a fine, because its gambling right? You would think that you could be put in jail for something like that. But I hope that doesn't happen!

Keep being an awesome brother and just talk it over with your family. And again, thank you for trusting us with your family issues. I hope it works out okay, and be sure to let us know what happens!

    I hope I was helpful

Maybe looki into getting sponsored by a local charity or something. Its how a lot of places get by those kinda laws, and illegalities; they just partner up with a charitable organization, which allows them to play poker as well as other things. Just so long as the charity gets a predetermined percentage of the house take or whatever. Hotels, bars, bingo hall; all of them have been springing up with poker because of this stiuplation or whatever thats placed on it. If you run it though a registered charity and give i believe 20% of the cut to them, it wont be legal to play real money poker. Hope that helps, definately something to look into.

Now, what should REALLY be done is quite simple, buy protection from the mafia. Im not sure where it is that yo live, but i assure you the mafia is there. Go to your local canoli store, and pick out the oldest, meanest lookin WOP u can find, and ask for a favor. If youre lucky, it will be the day of his daughters wedding, and hell have to do it for you.

Those are the two best ideas i got for you, ranking in descending order :-p

Plain and simple, what the bar is doing is illegal, that's why they are keeping it quiet. Cash can never be paid out period. They risk losing their liquor license and everyone else takes the risk of being arrested. All staff, including poker dealer would be arrested on the spot. All it would take is one raid and many people would go down with the ship. The only clubs that can pay cash is private clubs like the American Legion, the Elks, etc. Thats why their drinks are so cheap because you have to be a member to drink or play there. They have a private club liquor license. If I remember correctly, you are the one who is pregnant...picture this in the paper...pregnant poker dealer arrested at local bar...please be careful, don't let this happen to you. As far as your sister, she's not old enough period. There is no sense in screwing up your life for something that doesn't have to happen. Just something to think about....

Why not just get the group to go to someones house and play. Beer is

cheaper that way and the cops are more likely to bust yall at a bar rather

then a house. just throw a big party and have the poker game in the

garage. u live in texas and the law when i lived there is poker can be played

for money in bars, house, or where ever as long as the place where it takes

place doesnt make money from the poker game. correct me if i am wrong

but a group of my buddies from texas all looked it up. the law might of

changed the in last few years but thats the way it used to be. also what

kind of limits is this going to be. honestly its not like there are going to be

any big ballers there so the cops wouldnt waste their time anyways.

    Here is my opinion....

First of all the whole thing is not so hush hush

now, as it has been posted on the world wide internet.

But since it is going to be a back room chip thing and

it is not on the up and up to begin with what the heck

difference does it make if the dealer is of age. Breaking

the one law is no different than the other. On the outside

people will see that it is not a real money game anyway

so it is ok for a person underage to deal the cards.

You said, your sister found the job first, right? But what I don't quite

understand is if it all happened so casually, why are your mom and sister

upset with you in the first place?

You have a job as an editor. You are pregnant and should not

be on your feet breathing second hand smoke for hours on end

in the first place. I say let your sister have the card dealing job. And if she

needs a day off hear and there let her and the owner know

that you are willing to fill in. But that having given it some thought

and discussing it over with your husband and friends, that you have

decided that it would not be in your best interest at this time to put

yourself and baby boy Blakley dealing cards at a poker table in the back

    room of a bar.

    Just my opinion!

Pokerkitty, sptting the truth and nothin but, LOL. I read that post and pretty much every point made in it was valid and well thought out. Kudos, i definately think you helped Kaci out with her dillema. Sucks that it is so black and white like that. If they get caught the bar could lose its license and ppl would get arrested and all that.. it just makes me think why? Why would the govnerment make it illegal to do that? Would it be a front for drugs or illegal activity or something? Too much cash changing hands without a record of it?? Seems like everything you could do u need to get the govs permission for :-(.

u definately hit the nail on the head though kitty

    ok kitty nailed every point!!!

I used to play a freeroll at a bar. The bar wanted to play cash but they couldnt because you can get into a lot of trouble. So what they did was have an envelope and you paid 10 bucks (if you wanted too) and the last person who was in the envelope and still playing in the tourney would win all the money.

it was good b/c i always lasted long but it ran into problems b/c people actually playing the freerolls screwed it up. becuase of bad play!!!

Okay playing in this bar is perfectly legal.

What goes on is, bars, in the state of Texas are allowed to play poker/have a poker game for a prize.

Said prize is just cash at this place. And is legal so the only thing that the problem is my sister.

I understand and want to give her the job but the owner wants me to deal also, just in case someone comes in, which makes no sense to me what-so-ever.

And the poker area is a no smoking section.

I've dealt before and wouldn't worry about that part of it.

I'm just not good with conflict is the problem but I think I know what I am going to do now, so thanks guys.

I'll update you guys with my decision tomorrow.

That's what I've been telling her but it's solved now.

I called the owner and I'm going to deal and she can deal sometimes too.

And I'll split the money with her whatever we make.

She's filled out plenty of applications so hopefully she gets hired and it won't be an issue as she'll have to work on Wednesday nights.

Well we can hope at least.

    YAY SOLUTIONS!

And who wouldve thought that texas would have a law that is different from every other continental state in the union

Every bar where im from would probably get fined, maybe even lose their license. Guess everything is bigger and better in Texas :-p

Well just think about it for a second- our last President was Governor of Texas for a while, and he thought he could do whatever the hell he wanted, not only with this country, but with the rest of the world, so draw your conclusions from that, lol.
