purchase on credit...Minimum??? WTF

ok so i go into this store last night in Nutley, NJ. It's a small convenience store and all i wanted was to buy some condoms so i don't have a kid early on in life. So i grab a small pack and pull out my debit card. The owner/operator of this crappy little store looks at me like i have 3 fn heads and says, "cash only, credit minimum of 10 dolla...ATM over there." At this point I am ready to bust a gasket and strangle this retard..."10 dollar minimum??? you're nuts!" again he repeats "ATM over there." I take the pack of condoms and throw them at him and say, "I'm not paying your store an extra 2 bucks to withdraw money because you cant take a small purchase on credit card." At this point he's screaming something in Arabic at me as I walk out of the store and rip the BIGGEST fart ever. I then proceed to go to cvs and buy what i wanted all along, only to pass out after i got home...gimme a break. This goes to show you why big business is taking over this country, because the small time owners are cheap *** immigrants(no pun intended). I find this in NYC as well, 5 dollar min here, 10 dollar there. I worked in a gym before who took credit cards at the end of the night and only got charged the % fee by the credit card company once a day! It's a scam and don't fall for it.

I'm not entirely sure you have your facts right. I've seen a "minimum" enforced at many locations (some of which I have been very good friends with the owners) and I have to assume they do it for a legitimate reason (likely a charge per transaction).

Small businesses can't afford all of the extra fees.

Dude, i used to work at a gym where we had a separate credit card machine where we were charged on the total of the day rather than each separate transaction. This was as close as last year at this time that i worked there. The small business owners scam their customers into using their ATM because they charge you a 2-3$ service fee which about 50% of that goes directly to the owner. The reasons i use my debit rather than cash are A)it's safer to walk around where i live without cash, and easy relatively to cancel your card if it gets stolen. B)I get 1 dollar transferred to my high yeild savings every time i make a purchase with my card. 5% for a year in savings.

Most places set minimums. I don't really see the big deal, as they don't want to be paying fees on a 2 dollar purchase. When I worked at a liquor store, we had a $10 minimum and it was never really an issue.

But yeah, I almost always use credit instead of cash. I'm a big fan of interest free loans and earning rewards!

If you ever have this problem, call the number on the back of your card and report the business, as well as their adress, and they will be fined as well as given a warning by the company they use for credit services. After 2 warning they will no longer be able to use this company and have to search out a different one(and most likely a more expensive one). I'm not too worried about a min 5$ purchase, but 10??? cmon man, i'm not spending more than i have to in your crappy store!

well u know it is illegal for them to do this. and also there are stores that say there is a certain charge if u use a credit card and thats illegal also. u should tell them next time u will report them to the better business bureau because it is illegal.
