    Default ???Guess the calories burned???

Ok so i'm bored as all hell at work today(labor day! WTF). I close the doors to the gym at 4pm, and i've been here since 7am...in the past 5 and a half hours(it's now just past 12:30) I've had one person show up. So at 3pm, barring noone comes to the gym then, i will jog on the treadmill for roughly 1 hour, if you can guess how many calories i burn in that time frame, you will win a special fitness based prize directly from me!

Price is Right rules apply to bidding.

Closest guess under the actual value wins. Just like in blackjack, if you go over, you bust.

The average male will maintain his weight on about 3200 calories a day. That is about 140 calories an hour at rest. So the 300 calories burned(for about an hour of treadmill) are not calories burned above your basal metabolic rate, they are calories burned including your basal metabolic rate. So for your time on the treadmill, you burned about 160 calories above your baseline

BTW, my basal metabolic rate is 2960, and i eat roughly 2500 calories/day..Exercise also raises your BMR for quite some time afterwards. I've studied Exercise Science for 6 years and have never once heard that so if you could provide some proof for it, please do.

what are your thoughts on this? .

With a proper exercise stimulus that dormant muscle can be reclaimed. When you get back the muscle that requires 250 calories a day to keep alive, what used to be an insidious weight-gain problem will become an insidious weight-loss technique.

also from the same site...looks like he thinks treadmilling for calorie count is lame(eat that 600 calorie pie sliceand then treadmill till 600 appears in the calorie box) ..you should be building a body of muscle so weight gain is unheard of......

Interesting, however what the treadmill actually measures is distance x incline %(with your bodyweight factored in if you add it, which i will) and it measures the amount of work performed in energy(calories) in other words, how much energy(calories) does it cost to perform 1 hour of jogging on the treadmill...the reason you would add your bodyweight in is because it requires more energy for a 300 lb person to run a mile, than a 185 lb person(pure movement of excess weight), hence if you did the same amount of actual work at 300 lbs. you would burn more calories because you are pulling a larger mass(your body weight). Thats all I was saying...
Thanks for the article, you learn something new everyday!

I would have to agree with that statement, woohoosue, gaining the amount of muscle equal to 250 calories, would increase your metabolism by 250 calories/day. You would have to eat 250 calories of protien more/day to sustain this muscle tissue. So a female who's basal metabolic rate is... lets say 2200 adds the amount equal to 250 cals of muscle would increase her daily amount of calories burned just from "being" upto 2450. What is your profession btw... i'm guessing a something in a health related field?

the old treadmills, when this publication was written between 1998-2000 used the equation he's talking about, but the new ones actually measure work done
