Wow. I hope this isn't normal cash game play for you. I can't see calling a raise with any 2 suited cards.

On to the hand. I'm assuming you were trying to steal on the river with the bet you made, however you showed nothing but weakness the whole hand. To make an attempt to steal the pot you need to show some strength somewhere in the hand, other than just the river. Try betting the flop or turn if you think they didn't hit your opponent. Checking and waiting to the river is only asking to get a call over 50% of the time.
