Default First Ever Photo of a Molecule!

I debated, but this is just so damn cool that it needs a thread.

This is it. Every single last atom. Sure, it’s a bit fuzzy, but still…very cool.

The researchers focused on a single molecule of pentacene, which is commonly used in solar cells. The rectangular-shaped organic molecule is made up of 22 carbon atoms and 14 hydrogen atoms.

In the image above the hexagonal shapes of the five carbon rings are clear and even the positions of the hydrogen atoms around the carbon rings can be seen.

To give some perspective, the space between the carbon rings is only 0.14 nanometers across, which is roughly one million times smaller than the diameter of a grain of sand.

And one last bit of info about how this little guy was photographed…

The experiment was also performed inside a high vacuum at the extremely cold temperature of -268C to avoid stray gas molecules or atomic vibrations from affecting the measurements.

    and why do we care.

    not worth a thread.

but molecular gastronomy does interest me.

I forgot to tell you that I do have pictures of water molecules taken of coarse under a microscope. I will try to find them. But these pictures were taken before and after this water had been blessed. It is unbelievable what happens to them and the different shapes they turn. It proves they are living though to say the least. Very interesting!

To be fair, it is such a ridiculously small object that they're photographing that just to get a picture of it out of focus is a miraculous feat imo. Hopefully sometime in the near future, we can get an in focus picture. I think it's awesome that we have come this far in the first place, for sure, though!

Perhaps you'll find this interesting...I know I did.

it's a (3 minute) video of a tooth. Several microscopes of varying intensities were used to keep zooming in on the tooth until it gets to an eventual zoom of 30,000,000 times.

Even if they have, does it matter? That doesn't make these pictures any less stunning and valid.
