Default What do you think he had?

This is from my BAP game tonight and was the biggest downswing I had to that point.

What do you think he had? I couldn't rule out AT or A9 to make the call. We were within 50 of the cash if I remember correctly. Should I have made the call?

he might have had 99 or 88. could possibly be a A10 hand. maybe more of a push preflop would have got you a better read. he could have been just making a play. to many scenarios.

I'm 99.9% sure I messed that hand of from the get go. I should of raised again preflop, but failed to do so. My next screw up was making a play when I should of happily checked and folded. There were too many different hands he could of had that made my play a -EV move. This one hand cost me a better finish in the tournament.

Lessons to be learned for others. Play EVERY hand like it matters. Watch the over aggressiveness when getting close to the monies. Instead of finishing in the top 150, I ended up in 254th. That is about $20 difference right there. I might of been able to make more chips along the way and finish higher even still.

If I remember my PT HUD correctly he had a VPIP of around 18, which makes him fairly tight. Most of the players I went up against were like this. It was weird from a standpoint that most players are loose and crazy in tournaments.

I know that the lack of raise preflop probably killed me, but I wanted to get thoughts and hopefully show people what happens when you mess up preflop. Like I said in a comment somewhere last night, this one hand KILLED from cashing deep.

    Cowboy,
It looks like villain's range is pretty narrow.
One of the first things I try to do in a tournament is figure out who min raises with monster hands and who min raises with all kinds of suited crap.
These days, it seems like the preflop min raise is some kind of junk hand more often than not and the postflop min raise almost always seems to be a strong hand. But those are just generalities.

So, if I have no reads on villain, I'm not putting him on a strong hand preflop. I'd consider putting in a substantial reraise and if he calls, move all-in on the flop whether I flop something or not (a stop and go).

As played, his check behind on the flop probably signals that he missed but he might have flopped something really good and is worried about losing you.
He probably has some real strength for his min raise on the turn. At this point, he could have AT, a 4, an overpair or some kind of semi-bluff.

The same logic applies to the river as that 9 really doesn't change anything. I don't think he would play TPTK this way, so I think he either has an overpair, a 4 or is running some kind of bluff.

It is just too likely that he has you beat and I don't think you are getting the right odds to call and try to beat a bluff. So, I think you were right to fold on the river.
