Default Parenting Help With My Son

My son is 23 months now and he has been through alot in life so far but that is not the problem. I am having problems with him acting out and doing crazy things to hurt imself.

For example last night he work up in the middle of his sleep screaming. I

know it could be gas but i doubt it was cuz when he used to wake up for

gas he would lift his legs towards his belly, but when he wakes up he just

screams for 30-45 mins. We used to try and hold him and confront him but

he didnt want any part of it. He was running away from us to the corner and

start kicking the wall and banging his head on the wall for no reason what so

ever. The doctor told us to just let him act out and ignore him when he acts

this way but my fear is he is goign to hurt himself hitting his head on the

wall. Somenight i dotn know what to do and gets really frustrating trying to

deal with it. Is this normal and i just overreacting or should i go get him

    checked out with new doctor?

Also the thing i dont understand is after he is done doing all his crying and

banging the wall he will come right to us and take his sippy cup like we first

tried to give him. Any advice or help???????????

well to be honest with you there is nothing u can do. its new phase that he is going thru. i say your best bet is to have him sleep with u 2 for awhile till he breaks it. thats if u are worried about him hurting himself. no doctor is gonna tell you anything because like the 1st one said let him act out. thats all u can do. ive been there and done that. as for the crying its just him waking up and crying. nothing else to it. when children wake up they really dont understand what they are doing when they act out let alone they dont understand it when they are awake. its all part of the process. the trial and tribulations of growing up. dont worry its a phase.

thanks for the advice. he does already slepp with us. this thing i am worried

about is when he wakes up he darts off the bed which is high off the ground,

thats scares me also that he is still not fully awake and will break his neck. i

know i am probly overreacting but it just worries me cuz the crazy people in

the nut house do the same thing by banging their heads against the door and

wall for no reason at all.

well he wont wont break his neck. u would be amazed at there flexability. well in the nuthouse they are nuts. your son is gonna be 2. your looking way to much into it. just relax. maybe u should get him his own bed. that usually works makes them feel like big kids.

we bought him his own bed but he seem to think we bought for him to jump

on. he has sleep in there once or twice but freaked out even more when he

woke up. going to start this weekend getting him to sleep in there even if i

have to sleep with him a few nights.

Targetguy I am understanding that you have taken him to the Dr. for this issue, if so I might consider taking him to another for a second opinion. Children don't normally bang their head on the wall for no good reason. Unless they are autistic or are very angry. You would be the only one to really know if he is just acting out or if something is wrong. I feel if he was just acting out you prob wouldn't be asking for advice. If you are concerned I would make an appointment with a Dr. You have that right. You are his dad.

As far as hurting himself.. I know girls that cut themselves..

I don't think that he's trying to hurt himself but I do think that he is trying to relieve some sort of energy. Not sure what you or his background is but maybe you should try talking to him about it. It doesn't seem that serious except for the fact that he is being a little boy.. I don't mean that in a negative way. But sometimes things are too hard for people to cope with. I would try talking to him and if that doesn't work then maybe taking him to see a doctor or counselor. I had a friend who's friend killed himself and what I heard is that, he was looking for help the entire time.

That may seem really heavy and it's probably not the case but I feel like I should say it given that you are asking for help and any sort of input may help. Being a mother is a beautiful thing. I know you will make the right decision regardless of what happens in the future and what is out of your control.

well he is too young to cut himself and we dont let him play with sharp

objects. he is almost 2 years old so i think its jsut a phase he is going

through or at least i hope. we have him going to the doctors again next

month for a check up and we continue to search for a answer but nodoctor

has yet to give us an answer except he is normal. one night i am going ot

record him and post it for you guy to see and let you see what he does and

then maybe you could come up with a better answer besides he is normal. i

am thankful for all your comments and i will conitune to monitor the situation

closely and keep you all informed.

my daughter who is also about 23 months is going through the same thing she is pulling my hair smacking me and constantly throwing her head back in a fit. I asked childrens hospital they said it was normal for babies to do that. It is either to get attention or they are mad at you. Hope this helps
