The biggest thing I see in this hand is that you didn't take what he was trying to tell you to heart. He checked with his first action (as did you) and the button bet pot. Your raise was a good play, showing strength post flop with top set is very good play. When the big blind re-raised you after your check raise you need to consider what he could have. There are two possible straights to consider as well as over pairs. There are 2 straights that can beat you (9/7 and 7/4) and that is it. The flush draw is possible, but I don't see a check re-raise on the flush draw. That is a -ev play as far as I can see.
Considering what he might reraise you with, but NOT raise preflop, you can rule out AA, KK, QQ, and possible JJ. He would possible check TT, 99's, 66's, 55's and any other two cards. Looking at it that way I might just call on the flop and see if the turn pairs the board. When the 4th straight card comes, it becomes 10x easier to dump the hand and save you some cash.
