    Default Don't Just Play Freerolls

I did this to myself for a while after I started, and I also see others doing so quite often. It's kind of a trap that can be easy to fall into because freerolls are safe; the only cost is time.

Don't get me wrong. Freerolls are a great way to start a bankroll - when you're a newbie. But once you improve your game a little, you can expect to make more per hour playing micro-ring and small buyin tournaments. The improvement in your game doesn't have to be much; just enough so you can consistently win from the ATMs who play at those levels without giving it all back to the relatively few decent players.

The mental adjustment is definitely more significant; you have to be willing to lose money once in a while in the short term in order to gain more over the longer term.

well i think we all did it unless we had a nice bankroll to start. when i first started i played alot of freerolls on paradise. but then that wore off because i didnt like making like $5 an hour. play 4 hours to win $20. not worth it. i only play them when they are satellites to get into bigger tourneys. other than that i am killing time. as for the mental part of it its completely different. u need to adjust everything about your game. then playing within your bankroll is what people need to be aware of also. just because u see a $2k 1st place doesnt mean your gonna win when u surrender half of your bankroll to play then miss out on the cash. but in dues time all frerollers get better at poker and move up. its just amatter of how long the adjustment takes that will make u better at poker. so forums like this are great for that change due to all the good info that is posted here and for all the good players who play on here. well my 2 cents.

I agree that you have to play small buy ins and ring games are what are going to help you make money by playing online when you are starting out but you are a bit better than the freeroll players.

Well at least you are willing to put a small amount of money up to see if that theory holds true.

I think freerolls are a great way to learn while you are learning. I'll still play them and hopefully learn something when I do.

The other thing is about the time.

Your time has got to be worth something in order for you to play poker and to try to play it for a career.

If you are trying to do it career wise or if you are just doing it for entertainment is something you need to decide before you ever start playing and depositing on an online site.

If it is for fun or an extra income I believe your time has to be worth more than an average hourly job rate.

If I'm playing for an extra income source I'd want to make and average of 15$ an hour at least and for the fun because if not it's not just worth it to me.

    Nice post and topic targetguy

    ABSOLUTELY CORRECT

I have never deposited 1 dime of my own money on any Poker site in 14 years. I once had a nickle and worked my way up to $1300 in less than a month. It can be done and it is fun doing it.
It also gives you confidence working from the bottom up.

If I could add one bit of advice to new players.

Don't be a gambler in Poker unless you got money to burn.
So many players go on a small losing streak and instead of quitting for the day and regrouping, they think they have to get it back ASAP.
    That's how you become broke.

Patience and long term goals are the keys to poker success.

Playing poker for a career is one of the hardest things to do ever.

If making a carreer out of somewhere where you can easily lose 10 buyins to a game in a day, when your bankroll is only for 20 buyins, even im not thrilled out trying it again

I remembered to come back and look at this thread but there is no article/anything from you on this.

Eejit you'll do it later guaranteed, right?

Maybe he had a bad experience and she ended up being a man.

But would eejit classify that as a bad experiment?

hmm, we'll just have to wait.

I totally agree with you freerolls can be nice bankroll builders but the quality of players is so low that you can actually get to playing worse because of it so play better competition so your game will improve.
