Default Lost Sound on Laptop and Need Help

I'm posting here because more people will probably see it here than in some other forum section like questions and I need help asap so that's why it's here.

I had a virus on my laptop.

Something called a trojan or whatever and I have restarted my laptop but for some reason my sound is not working at all but it will be at different times, but when I go to youtube.com to play a vid there is absolutely no sound.

I thought it was just the video but when I click on 8 vids and none of them have sound it's a bit suspicious to me.

If anyone could please help me with this as soon as possible that would be the best ever, And I'd be indebted to you.

I'm not a computer person really, I just do what I need to do on a laptop but it won't work and I need it to.

My first suggestion is a basic one.

Check your volume control and make sure it's not set to have no sound.

Start - All Programs - Accessories - Entertainment - Volume Control

Move the bars (put them all to the highest) to test and make sure that isn't what's causing the problem.

If not, post here again and we'll dive into some more complex solutions!

You say you had a virus on your laptop, has it been removed? Do you know what virus/trojan it was and what damage it does to your computer?

My own recommendation, is after you have got rid of the virus, you should back up any files you don't want deleted and wipe your hard drive. Reinstall windows and reinstall the rest of programs you need, and drivers. It's possible that the virus damaged the sound card driver, which is why it is failing right now.

If you haven't got rid of the virus, life is a lot tougher for you. Cleaning one up is very tough, and usually requires much effort and special software on the part of the user. If you don't have anything important on your hard drive, wiping it and starting anew might be advisable anyway. If you don't want to do that, the first step is to download and run McAfee stinger. You may need to run this several times to destroy the virus.

Post back here if you need more info or help, or if this works. Or NDN could be right and you unintentionally messed with those settings.

I'm on the pc right now, and the laptop is being restored completely back to factory settings.

There will be nothing on it downloaded and I have backed up files onto zip drives that are very important already.

I am going to try to do this and I will post back on this thread if it got fixed or not.

I will definitely be trying to get McAfee stinger if it will help this not to happen ever again.

Stinger isn't meant to be used as virus protection. It's meant only to remove a virus that is already there.

AVG free edition will help, and if you cant afford to buy anti virus software, it's what I reccomend.

Okay so I have everything back in order. Just wanted to update you and let you know and say thank you to all the suggestions.

My laptop looks and sounds like it is brand new.

I have AVG I believe and I'll be sure to get McAfee even though it's only for fighting viruses if they are already on the computer.

    Thanks klink.
