Pot Heads Need Finacial Aid Too!

I am Going to explain to you how a law passed in 1998 can deny student fiacial aid, and education to people making he streets unsafe and undercutting America's economic productivity and what steps you can do to change this.

The Higer Education Act (HEA) drug provision is federal law passed in 1998 that denies finacial aid to students with past drug convictions. Since taking effect in 2000, more than 175,000 would-be students have lost their financial aid b/c of past drug convictions, many of them for very minor offenses for which the law allows no judicial decretion.

When I was 18 years old I was charged for having a illegal substance.

Question 31 on the Free Applicaton for Federal Student Aid asks the student if hey have ever been convicted of possesion or selling of illegal drugs. If the student checks the yes box they are sent a additional form to fill out. Based on the additional work, the goverment determines whether the student will recibe finacial aid.

Dependig on how the student answers the questions on the federla application, Congress has said the goverment has the right to deny finacial aid to students.

Persons convicted in distrit court for a first-time drug offense while receiving student finacial aid lose eligibility for their loan, grand, or work-study for one year from the date and/or they lose their job and are forced to drop out of school.

The department of education reports that among students who left a four-year college before the beginning of their second year that 36% did not return within 5 years; 50% of those leaving a 2-year institution did not return 50% did not return within 5 years as well.

Thes are otherwise will performing students. No other type of criinal conviction results in the loss of student finacial aid!

Tom Anfell, campaign director for Students for Sensible Drug Policy says they were unable to find evidence that denying financial aid reduces drug use by young people.

Denyig access to college ony increases drug abuse, If a person has a college education, they are less likely to actively pursue a life of crime. Maybe a crime that could involve you or anybody in our society.

Some believe that people gettting fincacial aid spend it on drugs and might waste the money. I believe they should have tighter laws on what they can do with the money. They could have like the food stamp thing.

The HEA already excludes receibing lower than a "C" average in their studes from receivig federal fiacial aid. The Drug Provision, therefore, only denies aid to students who are doing well in school.

I believe Education has a long-term positive effect on society. We need to do whatever we can to keep it that way.

wow, good information. Fact is they want these people to be denied college loans SO they are more likely to "commit crimes" and "use drugs". Our emprisonment rate has only incresed over the last decades and its precisely becuase of things like this. Government money is allocated to companies that build prisons and provide food/water/electricity. Particularly with the construction and maintenence, our tax dollars go to companies who provide these services, and most shockingly, a lot of this money is given out in excess. The more people in the prison population the more money can be allocated from the taxes, and the more CERTAIN companies and people will benefit. I mean for christ sake, our former vice president owned a mutual fund where one of the stocks was a PRISON. The mutual fund made more money with more people in prison, dick cheney makes more money when the fund does, herego dick cheney makes money when people are imprisoned...
What ur saying is the tip of the iceberg, and its sad, its so f in sad that this kinda sh*t happens. Its all about money, and in your case a) the us government doesnt WANT people going to college on their dime(particular state run school) becaue that makes a better chance for them to go through the legal system or prison system in a negative way. Tax dollars gets allocated to these prison, which in turn goes to companies and people that give money to certain presidents campaigns.... Get your money, then get outta the states, because its only going to get worse. Especially with all this money obama is creating to give to the banks and the auto industries. they took our money through their poor business practices, and practicing poor business ethics, and then theyre bailed out by the same people they screwed over. not only that, this money that was created was created with interest, so were also paying off the interest on paying off THEIR debt that they created by screwing US over.... Igot through college stoned as hell everyday, so i dont see what the big deal

is. i no longer smoke a ounce a day, and i dont commit crimes, and ive never

had a record. The government just needs to make sure the money is going

were it needs to go.

College is made for learning and experimenting and experience. You can definitely get an education and party all you want. If you think pot gets you lazy think of all the financial aid that you will have to pay after you finish school and get that awesome job that you have been working for during your college years.

Yes I smoked everyday in my first year. To be honest it was probably the best thing that happened, as smoking is a social drug and you meet hundreds of people that smoke at the university. You also have to put your priorities first which is school. I had early classes and to make sure that I got up in the morning I had girls call me or knock on my door to get my a** up.

Yes, its a good advice as people do become lazy smoking weed, but people are different as well. I dont have as much smoking experience as you ringo but I do have the experience to put some input.

Like I said earlier if you put your school first and realize how much money is going to school then you will be okay. After finishing my first year at the university, it is now 2009, I just finished paying off my financial aid after 9 years.
