In my idea of overbetting pots there are three variations of this and i plan on talk about each a little bit
1. Over betting to get a call
2. overbetting to get a fold (also known as a bluff)
3 overbetting b/c your a reckless fish or b/c you don't know any better
1. The first one is one i find myself doing most often...and it seams to work alot....in lower stakes games such as SNG's MTT's and even cash games..
You use this play against weaker apponents who feel you maybe be pushing them around....For example say you have AQ on the button and u are playing a small ball approach in a MTT...you have about 70BB's and the BB has about 60BB's You 2.5 bet you AQ and the BB comes along...and the flop calls A 2 7 rainbow....the BB checks to you and you bet 1/2 the pot and the BB calls....your read is that he has a weaker ace then you and the Turn falls another 2 again he checks and you bet 1/2 the pot again and again he smooth calls...the read is still the same ....he is hoping his weak ace has some showdown value...the river falls 3 andf he checks a 3rd time....this time you can use the overbet the pot play.....So say the pot is 2200....i would bet somewhere around 2375 b/c now it looks as though you are trying to buy the pot with an overbet...sometimes you will get a call and get paid off greatly...other times opponents wise up and fold...but either way this is a good play to hav in your arsenal
2. overbetting the pot to get a fold....is also known as bluffing....this is a very specific skill and i would not reccomend it to novice players
I rescently read an artical about "inside outs" and "outside outs" and i found it quite useful.....it is easier to explain if i give an example so here it goes...i will explain on the way......ok so say you have 99 2 places away from the button and u make a standard raise trying to isolate again one of the blinds....but it goes awry and the hijack and the button call along with the BB....so its 4 ppl to the flop which runs out Ad Qh Jh...and you think to yourself....welll i am on check fold now...but remeber you were the preflop raiser they don't know what u have ...the BB checks to you and u fire 3/4 pot and get 2 ppl to fold....only the BB calls.......the turn falls 3s and again he checks to you....so now you hafta be putting him on hands such as a big Q or a weak A....(again this is advanced play.....if they were on a draw they would prolly lead out into you....also known as a stopper bet...used to controle the size of the pot) So now that you know they arn't on a draw you can claim all the draws as your own including the straight and flush draws.....so you check behind...becuase theys what a draw would do to get a free river card....after all he doesn't know you don't hold a hand such as AhJh....so the river falls 4h filling "your flush" and he checks to you again....so now you must bet but not too much or it looks like a steal....so you bet 3/4 pot and your opponenet should but not always will fold thier weak Ace or strong Queen
So in this hand you inside outs were your actual outs....the 2 9's left in the deck and your outside outs ended up being any card that filled a draw
3. the last overbetting you will see if from "fish" or novice players
This you will usually see in freerolls and low buy in tournies...b/c its obviosly not good poker...your fish will shove all in on any had he "likes" could be suited cards to 2 facecards...if they like it they will shove....the othr is from novice players....this is one u might wanna look out for and not call....usually if a novice player is betting alot they have the goods weather it Be AA KK QQ preflop or the floped nuts ...if they are overbetting its bad news for you
well i hope this might help brodden the plays you make at the tables and don't just go around using these plays at your normal limits..try them al lower ones freeroll and even on your friends b4 you actually incorperate them into actual play
