Death Penalty

I was doing another one of tay's surveys (ty much) and one of the questions was about the death penalty. Of the responses i saw, and my own, there was one completely for, one compeltely against, and one both sides have good arguements (that was me :-p). When i first saw the question i found that i had a lot mroe i wanted to type, so i figured everyone would have a strong opinion on it, we'll see..

Both sides have good arguements. You can argue that no person or persons have the right to decide the fate of another, because man is fallible and emotional. Not only that, but i also personally believe that everyone, including evildoers " are capable of being truly radiant minds, its just that somewhere along the way their pathologys got screwed, something that can be fixed, i believe no matter what. So its hard to end a life knowing that if its working properly it can produce wonderful things. On the other hand If there is someone who is going to do mroe damage to the lives of others for the time that they're alive, do you as a person, or as people, make that choice of not allowing them to live.I do believe every person is capable of enlightenment regardless of their past discretions, but if they're going to do more harm then good (in a very direct way I mean) then you almost owe it to all the people that would suffer needlessly. I guess the old cliche, "do you kill one to save a dozen" rings true, as long as those dozen lives would be affected in a greatly negative way, because of that one life. Even as im typing it, im still on the fence. I want to hear some other thoughts i keep rearguing the point to myself..

I'm not a fan of it. I don't have enough faith in the legal system to be a fan of it.

I kinda agree with dingo.

However in my head surely an option would be to either give them the option of doing it themselves.

"I hereby sentence you to live in prison, for a minimum of 55 years, with nothing but a 13 foot long legnth of rope".

I was trying to find a way to use the famous phrase "Let him hang himself", bu i thought it was too obvious.

I dont think i agree with it, even though a few people deserve it, as surely life picking up soap is worse than a quick, painless, injection

Strange we are talking about the death penalty on here, but I'll hop on the bandwagon. IMO, since the United States has established fundamental ethics surrounding the 'innocent until proven guilty' clause, our nation then values individual rights over the prospect and potential of expansive communal safety. With this in mind, if we are going to continue in the path of exoneration, then the death penalty is not applicable. I'm just trying to be logical, rather than becoming overwhelmed with morality and empathy.

I am unequivocaly opposed to the death penalty in all cases. It costs more, is poorly carried out, and lawyers who take on death penalty cases do a ****ty job representing their clients. Plus innocent people are executed all the time. If you want to watch a really good movie on the subject, rent The Life of David Gale. It has Kevin Spacey and Kate Winslet in it and is very well acted and gripping, in addition to being informative. Unlike others here I also do not support the death penalty when applied to killers or rapists of family members. Death for these criminals, especially in our justice system, is too easy and often what these criminals want, and someone who is a criminal shouldn't be given what they want. They should be forced to live with their crime, as I being the relative of someone hurt am forced to live with it every day as well. Killing someone who is an imminent threat to your family is self defense, but the state killing people is playing God. No human should be in charge of someone living or dying. This is why I also oppose abortion. Many people who oppose the death penalty support a woman's right to an abortion, but I do not. To do so is nothing short of hypocritical. A life is a life, and they are all precious and meaningful to someone.

I really don't know as it's not a very popular movie for some reason, but it should be available through Netflix for sure. Also another good Kevin Spacey movie to check out is "21", all about blackjack. Both should be on Netflix or Blockbuster for sure.

I saw '21', I thought it was alright. Definitely not one of my favorite Spacey movies. HOWEVER, I did finally see The Departed last night, which was pretty awesome. I hate Matt Damon though, he is always such a dull character. Good thing they through in Leo and Jack to spice up the movie. And the therapist was on fire.
