1989 I was living in Austin Texas for just a year.
Well I bought tickets to a 49er vs Houston Oilers and Warren Moon.
I sent my best friend Dave (California) a plane ticket to join me at the game.
I paid $50 a ticket for end zone seats where all the 49er family members sat.
The story starts on the way to Houston from Austin. We decided to take back roads instead of the main highway because I had a suspended license
( another story ) (too shocking to tell ). Well I got pulled over and was told by officer to follow him to town to see the judge. OH NO. We get to town and we stop at an old fashion Dairy drive through to get drinks. Everyone
is friendly, we leave again and after 5 minutes Dave and I are really starting to worry because we aren't heading the same way anymore. 5 more minutes go by and the cop pulls over into a field and we stop. He says that he can't believe that both of us from California don't have a valid drivers License.
It was my 1st month in Texas. The Cop then says that the Judge must be fishing and couldn't find him and gave me a ticket and said "you drive that way and I will drive this way and if I see you again, I will arrest you."
I asked which way was the highway? He said you drive that way and I will drive this way. We drove aimlessly for 40 min and found the Highway.
Thank God we told him we were on the way to the game and showed our tickets and he didn't search our car and found our stash.
So we make it to Houston and spent the night in the sleaziest motel you could imagine. The next day was game day. Our seats were right next to the tunnel where the visiting teams enters. We could high five all the players.
Awesome and chatting with their families. During half time we met Steve Young under the bleachers and we got his autograph. I am a huge Steve Young fan. Well Dave got his hat signed and I had a Red marker with a red hat including the bill. So I had him sign my ticket stub, my prized possesion.
When the team re-entered the field I noticed everyone on the team had smiles and high fiving every hand. Not JOE MONTANA, his eyes were so focused. I will never forget that look. I was less than 20 feet from him.
What a leader. The niners were down 27-14 with 7 min left in the game and
Joe scored 2 touchdowns to win 28-27. The best weekend ever.
We walked to the Holiday Inn attached to the parking lot and the place was
packed. Well good thing I didn't get my hat signed. I was in hostile territory with the enemies Hat on. By the time I was able to squeeze to the bar for a drink, someone nabbed my hat and threw it across the room.
We smiled all the way home.
