1980, I went to a 49er vs. Saints game with my parents and best friend and we were down 35-7 at half. Bill Walsh had Steve Deberg at QB and experimented rotating QB's with his new rookie Joe Montana. Easy to do when you were 2-14 the season before. My friend and I were drinking heavily and some old lady was feeding us Oatmeal cookies. During the halftime, some grizzly looking faithful behind started shouting " FORTY"
pause "FORTY" pause "FORTY" that was it Bruce and I started shouting
" NINERS ". This went on for a while, then the team took the field and we start shouting "WE WANT JOE" "WE WANT JOE". Freddy Solomon, who was a WR, took the kick off up the middle, got stood up by big hit, bounced off it
and ran around the outside for a TD. 35-14
When the 49ers got the ball back again, it was all Joe Montana, tying the game at 35. In OT, Ray Wershing kicked the game winning FG.
At the time it was considered the greatest comeback in NFL history, now it is #3.
The story continues, when we left Candlestick Park and found that our cars
back window had been smashed with several others in the parking lot.
I proceeded to throw up all over the place and passed out for the ride home.
