    Default Raising instead of limping

I watched alot of poker on TV this week, including the HU competition.
The one thing that stood out is the pros always raised 2 1/2 to 4 the blind
when opening a pot. I never saw a limper.

When do we stop limping into pots and start raising?
    When we turn pro?
When the blinds get to a certain level?
    How do we know?

    Cool

Im guessing the pros do this as a form of controlled pressure to keep a psyhcological advantage over thier opponents. Its plainly obvious they dont have a hand every single raise, so it is diffenently they do it for value pruposes and mind games.

They do it for TV ratings.

Watch a live table of Pro's, or a sreious WSOP ME table. They limp all day long there.

Also learning when to limp is a huge asset to your game.

    Really?

So they tell all the players to raise in, to boost ratings?

    Who asks who?

We are talking about the WPT run into the ground by Steve Lipscomb
who can't even keep a beer sponser.

I seriously doubt that the players are going to change their game to
    accomedate ratings.

Cmon, the HSP and PaD stuff? And that crazy thing they had a few years ago.

In HSP the cash game on, they all limp every pot. They play it like fun, and fun is in a lot of pots.

In PaD, the SnG one, its all raising, due to mainly the fact in SnGs you dont often limp, and the fact for ratings in tourney structures raising is better due to bigger pots and bigger bustouts.

Just my opinion, but it makes sense

So you dont limp with 44 from MP? Or AA UTG ever? Or JTs or any other marginal hands?

The amount of times ive disguised my hands by limping is unreal. Limping is vital.

I may be wrong, but I think there's a slight difference between limping and slow-playing. Definitely slow-play your aces.

There is nothing wrong with limping into a hand. Eejits's examples of 44 from MP or AA UTG or even AK UTG are all great examples of good hands to limp with from that particular position. Most players expect you the raise with AA, KK, QQ, AK, AQ, AJ and sometimes AT. If you limp you will confuse the smarts right out of them.

I got called a donkey at a table because I limped with AK and took down a sizable pot. I was in late position and limped in to the hand after multiple limpers (table had shown that a raise wouldn't eliminate that many as compared to a flop bet). Flop came with a K and a couple of low cards. I called a 2/3 pot bet on the flop against only the SB. The turn brought an A and again I just called a 2/3 pot bet from the SB. River brings a T and puts a possible long draw straight on the board. Based on the betting I didn't figure him for a QJ and when he bet his standard 2/3 pot I raised it up to 3x his bet. He thinks for a sec and pushed all in for and additional minor amount. I call and take down the pot. Then the verbal attack begins. He's pissed I out played him with the limp preflop. He even went so far as to say "everyone raises with AK preflop from late position."

That should show the benefits of limping with big hands.

Ditto. I've heard "you disguise your hand by limping" I say you disguise your hand by always raising when you enter a pot.
