Default The Power of Sitting Out (Tourneys)

I think we all know how bad it feels to be chip lead early on in the tournament and then get suckered out of half our stack, put on tilt, and then get out of the tourney one place before the money. To put it bluntly, it absolutely sucks... might be the second worst feeling I've ever felt ( first being when my butter is to cold to spread on a soft peice of bread) Anyway, my father and I did a little experiment with what he called "the power of sitting out". In a few tourneys when I was chip leading, he told me I should sit out, while in another few I only played aces, kings, and queens. In the few tourney's that I just sat out in, I actually placed considerably higher than in the ones where I only played those few premium hands. So Moral of the story is that you should just consider sitting out when you are in the lead early on in the tourney. Aces get broken way to many times.

there are many times where i sit out after i triple up....come back an hour later and triple up agian.....i tend to do this with freerolls because there are way to many donkeys!!!!! so it can be good but in a 100 dollar tourney are you going to sit out......

I think this is a good concept im the eraly going and when the blinds dont get too high, but if your having one of those days where you do everything right and you win almost everything you play then stick around and dont miss out

    Default Dirty Little Secrets

I listened to a poker software designer on Rounders Radio months ago.
He said that the software has noticable tendencies to favor certain behavior.
I picked up on this years ago, but never had it validated. People have even
called me a robot because I play with such software tendencies and am successful. Sitting out for a short while almost always gets rewarded.
I play an afternoon game and get a call to pick up wife, everytime I left for 20min in mid game I cashed. The software designer also went on to say
that the seat positions are very important to focus on. Certain seats will beat another seat all day long with any 2 cards. Just try it! If you get beat twice by the same seat #, avoid at all costs.

no lie eejit, ive heard that software thing too many times to discount it...but i try not to think about it while i play...and i personally use online poker to practice for the real thing, and i just try to ALWAYS get my money in good...i get sucked out ALOT...but if you consistently get your money in good, you will over the years come out ontop...
BAD BEAT OF THE DAY...deep in a guaranteed tourney, i get dealt the best starting hand ive seen all day, QQ...guy in early position, who i had noted as a solid player, and seemed to me to be a pro, because he's always online playing and he's almost ALWAYS up at the cash tables...anyways, he raises to 1200 with the blinds at 200/400 from utg...im thinking to myself, uh oh, i know he's calling an all in if i shove, lets see a flop...so i smooth call for 1/4 my stack...everyone else folds...flop comes down Qs 7d 3d...SWEET!...he leads out for 2000 into a pot of 3000, i insta shove for 3000 ontop of his bet, he snap calls with KsKd...YESS...turn 5d river 3 d....CRAP! ahhh such a bad beat but i'll take that call all day...

I didnt make the thread.....ok lets say you are the chip leader for a 100 dollar buyin 50 people are left and top 30 get paid good money......you just take the worst beat ever ....quads over quads that your opp. caught on the river.... your telling me you would not take a break or sit out for 5 min....

i totally agree with you eej, if your money is on the line, why not try to make as much as possible with it, and i come out firing from the get go and try to build my stack as BIG as possible at all cost...i play to win and make alot of money, rather than just getting by

Hell no. Firstly ive never seen quads vs quads. If i was chip leader for a $100 buyin, 50 ppl left, 30 paid, that means 250-300 people started the tourney.

Cashing would therefore pay approx $175.

Which for a $110 game is a profit of $65.

Which if i was playing $100 tourneys is not much.

The only reason id go for a break from the table and miss hands is the following....

1 - I ran out of smokes and had to go buy some. (which happens occasionally)
2 - I badly needed the bathroom. (which happens alot)
3 - My computer broke, or lost connection. (which happs sometimes)
4 - A lovely woman was naked, and seducing me in a beckoning way (which happened once)
5 - Something was on fire (which happened twice, both times my cooking i was doing and forgot)
6 - Someone was at the door (A few times, once was the woman one)

    Default Im scared

Poker is all about making constant adjustments.
To say you would never consider sitting out on purpose
to possibly satisfy some software glitch in order to better increase
your luck factor is just plain BY THE BOOK. I am saying, It works!
So don't try it and continue to play by the book and everything is peachy.
I will continue to adjust to the software tendencies every chance I get.
Will this make me a worse player. NO
I understand the basics and the new aggressive approach to the game.
I don't think that is enough to give me the edge.
So, I am always looking for that edge.

Man i certainly hope not... If its ever found out that online poker has these odd tendencies ( favoring "donk" plays, certain seats winning) then that'd be a serious problem. On the other hand, just becuase of statistical odds in teh short term some seats will be "hotter" than others so unless the sample size of hands was really high, i wouldnt believe its fixed. About the freerolls thing, thats how u play a freeroll, double or triple up, sit out, then do it again. Playing too many freerolls messes up my MTT game though, it seems in the real MTTs im always too impatient, mauybe i should just stop playing freerolls :-p

I think this strategy is a little squisite, wird...
I do belive that somehow a program might have some crazy paterns due to some crazy bug on the program lines. But for the pourpose of cooling down I dont see the point, just dont go with bad hands.. thats it.

    Hugs for all!
