Everest Poker owners Gigamedia is thought to have hired investment bank Goldman Sachs to find a buyer for the whole company or simply its Everest poker brand. PartyPoker, who earlier this month reached a settlement with the US Department of Justice, is said to be one of a handful of parties thought to be negotiating with Gigamedia.
Rumors say Party Gaming is eying a number of possible deals, but declined to comment upon the talks with Gigamedia. A spokesman for the company said the following:
"We have made it very clear we believe the industry will consolidate and we will look at opportunities as and when they arise."
After the settlement with the DoJ, Party Gaming chief executive Jim Ryan said that the group was talking to financial institutions about arranging funding for acquisitions. Gigamedia told their investors last month it was "in discussions with several interested parties concerning the possibility of a strategic merger or a sale".
What would a merge between PartyPoker and Everest Poker mean to their customers? PartyPoker and Everest Poker is respectively the 4th and 6th largest pokerrooms online, and with their current players, they would be slightly smaller than FullTilt. If a merge would result in increased popularity, we could get a site strong enough to compete with PokerStars, but this is very unlikely if they don`t let the american players in. The fact that we would get a notable fishpond of big dimentions is pretty certain.
