I have 15 minutes to kill before i watch the highlights on the ashes, and ive exhausted all the new posts and figured id go retro and post something ive probably done before.
MTT selection.
After rereading something i wrote about rebuy tournaments, i was thinking about the difference between the different games online.
Freerolls
The simple form of the game. FRee to enter MTT style. Usually (if not always) full of people who dont know the game, slightly know the game, or know the game fine but use them as a chance to play like complete idiots.
Freezeout
Standard games. EVeryone pays a buyin. All the buyins are pooled and split according to a standard payout structure. They usually pay the top 15% of the players entered, but obviously some sites have different structures. Cake for example pays up to 20% sometimes, with the places closest to the bubble earning just over their buyin back. Fulltilt however pays less %, 12% in the last game i was in, but they are incredibly top heavy. I came 15th out of 2,000 once in a $26 buyin and won $140. which was odd.
Rebuys
The weirdest form of the MTT. You can rebuy your chips if you lose, or sometimes rebuy instantly for a double sized starting stack. Benefits of this is you are not charged a fee on the rebuy, so the site does not make money from the rebuys. However this often turns the first hour untl the rebuy period is over into a "donk fest". For further information about this tourney style, there is an excellent post here.... https://www.nodepositneeded.com/foru...-question.html
Guaranteed
A standard MTT, however it will have a set amount which will be given away, unless more people enter than is guaranteed, then the pool rises. These guarantees are almost always bet, and the tourneys usually start with a larger pool than anticipated. However on sites ont he Merge network, guarnatees are usually not met, resulting in an overlay. These touneys are usually great to play, as if a game is overlayed, the site is adding free money to your MTT, so if its a $10 buyin, with $1,000 guaranteed, and it only gets 50 players, it effectively doubled your buyin to $20 for free!
Shootout
This is played in a sit and go style. Everyone is set on a table, to an even standard. These tables are played until there is a winner. The winners of each table advance to the next table. On some sites you will have to win 6 tables to win the event. On others only 2. These are most used for sattelites.
Sattelites
An MTT, either in rebuy or freezeout format, where the prizes are seats into bigger tournaments. Sometimes they guarantee a certain amount of seats, sometimes not. The style of play changes towards the end of these, as you do not need to win the tournament, just cash... so playing hands if you have enough chips to make it becomes pointless. Ive often folded AA at the end of these in order to "fold into the money"
Majors
These are the big tourneys of the week/month. They are big buyins, with huge guarantees. Stars has the Sunday Million/Warm-up, Fulltilt has the $750k guaranteed, Mulligan and double deuce, Cake has their monthly $100k and $250k guarnateeds, Merge has their weekly $50k guaranteed. Basically on sundays or the last sunday of the month, these tournaments are the best shot at winning a 6 figure hit youll ever get. Usually full of great players mixed with idiots who sattelite in or have money to burn.
Double Chance
A standard rebuy tournament, but your only allowed one rebuy/addon. This is more commonly used in live tourneys, however it is now becoming popular online.
Now, everyones games are not suited to all of these tourneys. You need different skills for each one. So all im advising is to check what game your getting into before you play. If youve never played a specific game before, all poker sites will have information on their games and general tips.
Good luck.
