NDN's Tournament Losses

I often read about how everyone thinks they get "bad beat" more than everyone else does. I'm not talking about getting "bad beat" in the true sense (losing with quads to a royal flush for example). I mean getting beat when you are a significant favorite in the hand.

I've played my fair share of poker (online and off) and I am accustomed to losing with some pretty strong hands where I am a significant favorite. I'm also not one to get mad at another player if I lose a hand where I was the favorite (a true player has to have some class)! Besides, for the most part, I want those players in the hand in most situations.

However, in the last year, I think I have truly had more "bad beats" than most people could ever imagine. I'm not talking about just a couple of hands in a couple of tournaments. We're talking nearly every tournament I have played in for longer than I care to remember. What's most frustrating about these beats is that they are coming one after another and they are always in the late stages of some rather large tournaments. These are hands that mean the difference between barely winning my buy-in back if I lose the hand or likely going on to win a significant amount of money if I win the hand.

I know there are a lot of players who wouldn't complain too much about cashing consistently (and I am never one to complain), but it's getting far too frustrating to spend anywhere from 2-6+ hours going deep in each tournament I play only to win a few bucks at best (while losing to some incredibly poor hands/plays).

When I want to, I can play some pretty high quality poker, and in most of these situations I am playing the best poker that I possibly can. This is why I am having a hard time figuring out why I am not winning in most of these situations. A "good" player is "supposed" to be rewarded over time and should "always" win in the long-run when all things are considered. However, this is clearly not proving to be the case for me at the moment (a year long streak of beat after beat is not something I have ever encountered in my poker playing days).

I often take long breaks from the game because I lose a lot of patience for it after all of the beats I take. Instead of taking a break this time around, I am going to continue playing and use this thread to post some of my results for everyone to discuss. I wish I had been taking screen shots and getting the hand history for my last 50 tournaments or so to give everyone an idea of just how frustrated I have become, but just ask Eejit (he has witnessed quite a few of my most recent losses).

Here is a little set-up for this thread so you can understand where I am coming from.
- Close your eyes (read this first) and picture yourself in the same situation that I am in when playing these tournaments.
- You've invested a decent amount of money in a tournament.
- You are playing near perfect (possibly perfect) poker and you have built up a nice chip stack.
-You are anywhere from two to six hours into the game (imagine how draining it is to play perfect poker for 2-6 hours).
- You are in the money and you are starting to feel like you are getting rewarded for investing so much time and energy into the game.
- You start to realize that you have the potential to win a good chunk of change for your hard work.
- Suddenly, a situation arises where you are a heavy favorite to win a large pot.
- You know that if you win the pot, you are likely to go on to win the tournament (or at least place very high and win some decent money).
- Then, just as quickly, your heavy favorite to win a large pot loses to a weak hand and you are out of the tournament.
- You have cashed, but you've won just a couple of dollars for up to six hours of your time.

Now imagine that this happens to you in almost every single tournament that you play, because this is exactly what happens to me over and over and over again (no lie)!!!

Just to add - He isnt lying. Every single game ive played with NDN, or watching him play after I am out, or maybe still in, he loses to some seriously sick plays. The one that sticks in my head was his AA vs A3, KQ, and 33. Flop was i believe J 5 6. Turn 9. River 3. One Outed!!!! And this was a $55 buyin tourney, 3 hours+ in, just cashed for $60, bubble approaching. $4k for first. NDN wins the pot he has a huge chip lead with the Final table aproaching.

Example #1

Location: Cake
Buy-in: $50+$5 10K Gtd
Result: Cashed for $58. A $3 profit for about 3-hours of my time.
Hand Set-up: There isn't too much to set-up here. Justin83 raised minimum pre-flop. Moorman1 re-raised him minimum pre-flop. Having been on the same table with these players for a good chunk of the tournament, I was quite excited to push all-in pre-flop. Justin83 folded and obviously moorman1 called. I'm still trying to figure out why moorman1 re-raised preflop because if I didn't push all-in, Justin83 was obviously going to play the hand out and 43 isn't something I would feel too comfortable getting all of my chips in with. He and I were very close in chips, so without looking up the numbers exactly, I believe moorman1 still could have folded after my all-in (and should have) because he was obviously going up against a big pair.


My Thoughts: I am not too upset about this one because the action was pre-flop and I couldn't have played the hand any other way. Why he was in with 43 is beyond me though. I feel as though if I had won the hand, I would have had a great chance to be at the final table and take down good chunk of change.

This is just my first example of many. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I have exited nearly all of my last 50 or so tournaments in the same fashion as this one (often times much worse). I actually exited this tournament a little earlier than usual. Usually I lose in these situations right before the money jumps to a decent profit (around 10-13th).

ewww thats gotta hurt. y do people play like that i dont understand. i guess he was rooming with the dealer. u know ive played like that b4 but that was for small change. i guess some people have chips to burn and some dont. i know i dont.

I would never think of ND telling a lie.I do have a tendacy to cry, usually only at Eejit.I feel bad for ND, but trust me I do know how you feel.I used to play alot, I think ND can tell you that.This happened alot to me as well, not A8 vs A7, but real quality hands.I used to feel like they knew what was going to happen, and always I thought it just happened to me.After eejits post on his 20k win at Stars,"it is now the 3.30 rebuy something but anyways.I wanted to try it, I played almost 7 hours if my memory is correct and lost with AA to the chip leader with 44, he was BB tho and I let him push.So I know how you feel big guy and have been there.Now after I have read this I am going try to stop complaining, so thanks ND for a great post! I hope your luck changes sir and you WIN BIG!
