DOVER — Legislation that will bring legal online casino gaming to Delaware and expand the state’s betting offerings beyond the confines of existing casinos is ready for the governor’s signature after passing the Senate on Wednesday.
Proponents hailed House Bill 333 as a viable way to help preserve the state’s embattled casino industry, which is facing aggressive competition from new venues in neighboring states. However, the bill just barely met the three-fifths majority needed to pass the Senate amid concerns from some lawmakers that expanding gambling will expand the social ills associated with it.
Gov. Jack Markell, who backed the measure, could sign HB 333 into law as soon as today and make Delaware the first state in the nation to legalize full-scale casino betting on the Internet.
