ShortStacks
Ok, figured id make a new poker post as ive been.... at least 2 days now.
Shortstacks. Basically - people at the table who are low on chips - but we all know that.
Now, im gonna start with something i just witnessed, ill keep the person anonymous.
In the latest NDN chips game, someone had 365 chips with 25/50 blinds. They pushed UTG. UTG+1 flat called for a third of their stack with A9 off suit.....
Now i understand that some people dont understand true hand values and play for fun e.t.c, but lets discuss this as if it were a serious call..
Now, UTG is pushing with 7 x BBs left. This is a manageable stack, and can probably afford a few hands to wait for something. So, your still having to assign this player a range, so IMO its 22+, KTs+, ATos+.
Now, yout UtG+1 with A9os. You have 6 players left to act. Let compare your hand to the range of the UTG pusher....
Your ahead of absolutely nothing. Your racing any pair 88 or less, behind to an A with better kicker. Practically racing KQ, KJ, QT ish hands. And utterly dominated by 99+, AT+.
So your call becomes instantly... -EV. (bad odds).
Now, the reasons for calling with A9 can be summed u by this - If a person is low stacked, subconcsiously you dont often gie them credit for having a huge hand. Your willing to tke a gamble as it isnt that many chips. Maybe race them, maybe be a slight dog, who knows.
This is crazy. Wtih 6 people left to act behind you, one of them might reraise, forcing you to call as your pot commited getting nearly 3 or 4 to 1 on the aftermath call from someone else pushing. Then even HU vs the bettor, your still racing at BEST.
I figured id post this as i dont unserstand the mentality in doing this in a non-bounty game. If its a bounty/KO/Headhunter, go nuts, take the risk as its +EV with the amount youll win for the bounty. If not, protect what you have, let him steal if that happens, as no matter what, even if they push and win the blinds from UTG, they only bought themselves a free round, and with the blinds going up, the pushing will get worse, and sooner or later someone will wake up with a monter.
Its basic stack conservation.

Ok my thoughts......If i was the person with A9os during the dealer postion..... i look at it has a 7.25 raise of the big blind and not a all in tilt play!!!.....Now if you want to call a raise of that much without you raising first go ahead and play it....i see it has a race and i am prob not risking a third of my stack....however if i have read on the person for knowing to push with A2os or 78s and hands in that range i might call if they are on tilt.....
but some players just play and dont anaylze what they are doing sometimes!!!!!

What if A9 pushes instead of the flat call?
-
ok dont mind my post ealry......i thought A9os called the all in for 365....your said they had a9os pushes for 365......
this is a easy move ........FOLD!!!
-
A9 called the all in and the rest folded.
If its pushed UTG and then A9 pushes over, its slightly better as its minimizing the calling hands or marginal hands that beat A9, but AQ+ still calls it, and now your losing al your stack insted of 365.
Id still muck A9 here in this spot.
-
I think the call does the same as if the A9 had re-raised all-in (meaning it should scare the rest out of the pot), but just calling gives them the option of folding "if" someone else pushes (not likely) but at least they leave themselves an out.
-
True, but why do it anyway?
-
Because you are +Ev to be ahead of the 365 SS and +EV to have the remaining players fold...

What if the person had to pee real bad?
