How do you inspire self confidence in others?
This question reminds me of my nephew, Matthew. He was burned over 80% of his body at age 3 and is a life time Shriner's patient. He is 14 years old now. People stare at him all the time. The first time I went out bald, I knew what he felt like. One day when he was around 6 years old, I heard him calling a couple of girls a "ho", I said Matthew stop calling them names, do you know what a ho is? He says no, so I tell him it's not nice to call people names. He says they were calling me names first. What did they call you? He wouldn't tell me. I said, does that bother you? He says yes. I say why? He says I don't know. I told him you can't waste your time with people like that. I asked him are they your friends, he says no, are they your family- no- do you know them- no- do you love them- no way-I said ok then don't let it bother you. If you don't know them, they are not your friends or family, you don't love them, so who cares what they say? He laughed and said you're right, they are nothing to me. I told him regardless of what you look like people will call you names for the rest of your life, don't respond to it. I told him one day a lady called me a bit ch, he asked me what did you do, I told him nothing, except tell her she's got it all wrong, I'm not the bit ch, that's my sister. He started to laugh again. Soon after this conversation we were at a restaurant and this old guy kept staring at Matthew, I was not sure what he would do. Matt goes over to the old guy and hey mister take your hat off, the old guy didn't know what to do so he takes his hat off, Matt says put it back on, you're ugly without it. Matt returns to his seat and says I feel better, he's not starring at me anymore. I have shared this story over and over again. When it comes to people calling you names or staring at your disability....if you do not know them, they are not your friends or family, who cares, don't waste your time on people like that. Matt's confidence level is very high today and he plays football for his highschool team. The other teams are afraid they will hurt him by the way he looks, but I tell you he is one of my hero's in life and the strongest person I have ever met. I have a picture of him on my wall with the words "Deal with it" My personal note to self, if Matt can be this strong with surgeries every time he grows to strech his skin (human torture) then I can handle cancer. We have given self confidence to each other. Thank you for letting me share this.

I would like to win the generous offer but,, I find it hard alot of times to instill confidence in myself so doing it for others is easier in some ways and not in others. I generally like to wish people here good luck in there games even though I am not in the BAP or have any stake in it. I think people like to hear it since there being watched by alot of people rather than just a risk of there own money. I think its very easy to tell a little kid you can do it and clap they get all excited and smile even if they suck at a sport or whatever positive reinforcement goes along way. I think as an adult either your confident or your not. 50 people can tell you your a great poker player but if the individual doesnt feel it it wont ever happen. were born alone we die alone and if a person needs others to make them feel worthy then there in for alot of disapointment.

Just a question, is it possible to have this prize redeemed for another game? I have class and won't be able to play in the game tonight, but I will in a future game. Either way I will think of something to write here later, as it has been very encouraging to me to read other posts here! You should write something too, I think. And make NDN do one, he's too quiet sometimes.

Pokerkitty is the front runner
Thanks for that, it was a beautiful story.
Tay you can win 500 chips to do what you want to with.
Markfixit, you do inspire me with your calm spirit and don't think we don't notice. You hit it on the nose about being able to love yourself
is more important than getting approval from others.
But it sure feels good when you get it.

Inspiration, hmmmm.....
Something I personally havent had too much of lately. Inspiration is not something that you try to get, by reading self help books, or something that can be done by going to the shrink. Inspiration just kinda comes to you, like a faint wind on a still day, or a good friend you havent seen in a long time. Somw things that I have found that trigger Inspiration is here, at NDN!, going on a fishing trip to get away from everything, accomplishing something that you have been meaning or wanting to accomplish.
I can find Inspiration just by reading or hearing the life stories of others. In poker inspiration can come just by watching my favorite player, phil ivey, at the ivey thunderdome.
Inspiration is not something that you can reach out and grab with your hands at will, and use when needed. If anything, its a kind spirit, waiting for that right moment, when your heart is ready, then you join hands, and you feel it, and it is one of the best feelings in the world.

I wont be able to play in 2nites game...but wanted to share this anyway (as I think its cute yet funny)
My son is 2 1/2 and we have been trying to learn the whole pee-pee on the potty thing, but to say the least it has been a long uphill battle. We have tried everything in the form of bribery from toys to M&M'S to trips to the playground and still nothing but we still tell him good boy for trying. Im beginning to think he will be in pull-ups forever. So in hope of lifting his spirits even more the other day (he does speak and understand by the way) I said its alright lil' man b4 you know you will be playing at a final table on a big $tourney online and hauling as$ outside and peeing off the deck as fast as you possibly can to assure you dont miss the next deal that may be pocket A's.
I believe he is NOW inspired!

I do not have a story like kitty's powerful story But i can try and inspire others.
Inspiration comes from the inside and is let out when you put a goal in front of you. It can be a goal of any sort, for example music, learning, helping someone, it can be a long term goal or a short term goal.
my only story i can think of is: i was taking a public speaking class and we had to do our first speeches. well this one kid came up and gave his speech and it was about how he thought about killing himself everday. it was a powerful speech and it inspire me to say hi to him everyday after that. so inspiration to me is a arousal of the mind to special unusual activity or creativity.
