The Best of British - The American's guide to speaking British...
Some of these words are priceless.

Mutt's nuts - If something is described as being "the Mutt's" then you'll know it is fantastic or excellent. "The Mutt's" is short for "The Mutt's nuts" which is clearly another way of saying the "Dog's Bollocks"! All clear now?

My new saying:

Your win Eejit was the Mutt's nuts.

I love it

Toodle pip - This is an old expression meaning goodbye. However, I only hear it when Americans are doing impressions of Brits as it has fallen into disuse, along with steam trains and gas lights.

This is the worst phrase I ever heard.

Goodbye my love

Toodle pip my love.

sounds like you going to the Loo

Fanny- It means vagina for those of you wondering.

I totally found this out by watching Daniel Radcliffe, aka, Harry Potter on Inside the Actor's Studio.

It was a great watch by the way.

I did enjoy it.

Just wondering what is up with the Brits using the ou in words when it is not needed?

You know what I mean.

Color > Colour

Favorite > Favourite

That kind of stuff.

If you want to explain it to us yankees.

Please do.

You now have permission.

I'll stand up for eejit on this one, lol. We're the ones who got the language from the Brits in the first place, remember? So we're the ones who decided it's not needed and unnatural and decided to change it.

As to why though, I'm not sure.

I know we decided it, Tay.

I was just wondering why.

Other than to use up more space in their works of writing.

Maybe it is feel space.

Maybe not.

But eejit is a brit and I think it'd be better for him to explain to us.

Rather than just google it myself.

I'm wondering if he give it to us better than some random newsrag.

That's what the Brits call Newspapers?

Right? lol

In the 1700's the new pioneers hated everything about Great Britain.
They indocrinated everybody to think and talk and write differently that the Brits. It is now like Apples and Oranges in every comparison you can think of. Mutt's nuts

Ringo is kinda right.

As for everything else....

Newspapers = Newspapers, or just "the papers"

As for why you americans were "lazy and took out the ou", its because your lazy. Thats why 95% of Americans are fat and full of cheese:)

KaciBlakely
07-16-2009, 04:48 PM
That is not an accurate statement.

I am neither fat nor lazy.

And I think saying ninety five percent of Americans are obese and don't apply themselves is just wrong.

Do we need to give you swats Eejit?

We don't insult your Queen do we?

lol

I resent that
I'm not full of cheese

Sorry,

95% of Americans are fat, and full of cheese AND fast food. Better?

And the other 5% are either fake or ugly.

(And yes, im saying this to wind you up, and i dont care:))

KaciBlakely
07-16-2009, 05:39 PM
LOL.

Eejit can wind me up any day.

I think the numbers are more like 80%.

And there are fat people in europe too.

America just has a bad image for obesity but we are not the only ones.

So why don't we get this thread back on topic.

KaciBlakely

Oh that meant nothing actually.

It's kinda a KTHXSTFU, conjunction.

It's just ERM, like umm.

And OK, as in okay.

So it's ERMOK.

It just means I'm done with this thought.

ERMOK.

Get it?

What is wrong with saying Y'all? I use it every day when talking with people. Does it make me fat and lazy?

Why didn't you respond to my ERMOK post eejit.

I figured you would like to make fun of that one.

What if I started using ERMOK after every post instead of LMFAO.

Would that be better for you.

At least you know know I am just finishing my thought.

I don't think you did.

Id love to hear why "dog and bone" means phone? That one def escapes me. Only british slang i know is from guy ritchie movies, i definately like "proper f**ked". And i dont know why, but i love the word "quid". "give ya 5 quid for that gov'nor" is a lot coller than "ill give you for dollars for that sir". Hands down the coolest thing about the brits is the language or colloquialisms.
- Cheers Mates!!

I wonder if Eejit would know American slang better than British slang.

It seems to me he would but I don't know.

Interesting question, me thinks.

It is known as ****ney Rhyming Slang.

From Wikipedia:

Rhyming slang is a form of slang in which a word is replaced by a rhyming word, typically the second word of a two-word phrase (so stairs becomes "apples and pears"). The second word is then often dropped entirely ("I'm going up the apples"), meaning that the association of the original word to the rhyming phrase is not obvious to the uninitiated. For example: "Sherman" for an American (Sherman tank = Yank),[1] or "septic" for an American (septic tank = Yank).

Here are some examples, also from Wikipedia:

Very nice information Tay.

Thanks for showing it to us all.

Talking about other peoples cultures, even if it's just the way they speak, is very, very fun.

KaciBlakely

That link that Tay posted did not even lead to anything bad.

Just in case you were worried about getting a virus or something.

eejit101

I do not worry about viruses.

I was quoting. Nvm.

KaciBlakely
07-17-2009, 08:46 AM
Okay okay.

I didn't get that because it wasn't in a quote.

But it was the same thing for me on the Harry Potter thread, so nvm and we're even on that mistake.

Oops.

eejit101
07-17-2009, 08:57 AM
What mistake?

And you realise you dont need to reply to every thread right?

KaciBlakely
07-17-2009, 09:08 AM
When I misquoted or missed the quote and you missed mine.

And yes I realized there are threads I don't have to reply to but felt I should because we are talking about different subjects.

I'm going out for the day and won't be here, so I won't be here, to reply or make new threads, oh joy.

You guys have fun.
