Question for Eejit or anyone?

Do you know if a magnet can harm a computer? For example if a magnet were setting next to the tower/cpu etc. I know that it can do damage to some things but what about a computer?

Lots. Lets start with the fact that hard drives store their information, magnetically on platters inside them. Change the orientation of the magnetized particles on the platters with a magnet and you change the data stored on the drive. Read write heads inside the drive do this for you in an organized fashion, something your PC understands. An external magnet applied to a drive scrambles that into information the PC can't understand. Basically, wiping out anything stored on the drive.

Oh my Gosh! Thank you eejit, My computer is a pretty good computer. I bought it new and it has been great! The past few days it has been acting way f---d up and weird. I have had one h-ll of a time trying to figure it out. Blah blah.... so I am freaking out right and looking to see if my cords have been messed with or anything and right stuck to my computer is this damn flashlight that has this very strong magnet inside it??? I haven't a clue how it got there and of coarse no one else around here does either. It is amazing the things that grow and shed legs around here by their selves. Very interesting! Anyway I of coarse pulled it off and moved it and things seem to be a little better. I hope it did not damage my baby. I would have not much to live for without my computer. And you can believe that I aint nothin nice when it comes to messing with it either. I am way cool but I must draw the line somewhere. Now I am gonna stress out about it until I know.

umm never put anything that can hold a electrical charge near a computer. static shock can do some damage thats y i never put my comp directly on the carpet or anything. u need to make sure u have a good ground to in your electrical outlet. magnets hold a electrical charge and so on.

Thanks GloBug, it seems to be ok now. What a weird experience though because it was not normal. But now so far seem to be ok. :)

I know, but with my dial up connect it could take years before I get an answer that I can trust and here answers so quick and I can trust the answer. ummm I think! ;) Oh and eejit knows everything!

Oh shoot I never thought of that before. My computer tower sits right on the carpet. Can I just cut a piece of cardboard or something to put underneath it or what?

i would put a rubber mat underneath it. rubber is non conductive. no card board that still conducts electricity which interns can cause static shock.

I live outside of Marysville in D 10 no dsl here att says maybe in July and have been saying maybe in ??? for two years now. I could get hughs net maybe but that is an expensive process. I have tried with a usb card/aircard but for some reason cell phones get no reception at all for about 4 miles no kidding they will not even show a missed call? It totally is a bummer! Dial up as un true as it may sound is honestly my only option. Believe me I take some classes on line and it is difficult.

Oh and 2 hours was of coarse stretching it but it does take some time. To watch a video on YouTube or download a song is not going to happen! If you can make it happen come on down my husband and I would love to have you and yours for dinner. You don't live far from here. And if you can't make it happen maybe we can all get together sometime anyway. :)
